Member of Technical Staff (Research Engineering)

Aemon is building the first autonomous AI research engineer.

We define it as systems that can take a hard scientific or technical objective, understand the frontier, design trusted evaluations, run experiments inside real codebases, and keep improving until they discover validated breakthroughs.

This is a new kind of engineering problem: long-horizon agents, codebase understanding, evaluation design, research synthesis, experiment infrastructure, and systems that turn every result into a better next attempt.

The team is deliberately small and extremely high-density. Everyone at Aemon has placed top 50 in their respective country in computer science or mathematics competitions. We are backed by tier-one investors and exceptional angels, including Paul Graham.

We are looking for people who are unusually ambitious, rigorous, and independent. People who can take an ambiguous question, turn it into a well-defined problem, and keep pushing until they find the most elegant solution.

You will join as a real member of the core technical team and work directly with the founders on the core systems behind Aemon.

The role begins with a 4-month paid work trial ($15000/month).

At Aemon, we work on deep, ambiguous, long-horizon problems. It takes time to understand the system, build taste for the research loop, take real ownership, and show how you think when the answer is not obvious. Four months gives us enough time to evaluate you holistically: your technical ability, judgment, speed, creativity, rigor, and ability to turn ambiguity into progress.

Just as importantly, it gives you enough time to evaluate us.

You should have the freedom to form a real view of the team, the problem, the culture, and whether Aemon is the place you want to bet on. We want people who choose us with conviction, not because of a rushed process.

Depending on your strengths, you may work on:

• Long-horizon AI agents
• Post-training & RL
• Hypothesis generation and search
• Codebase understanding
• Experiment orchestration
• Benchmark and evaluation design
• Research infrastructure for running large numbers of experiments
• Product surfaces for interacting with autonomous research systems

You may be a fit if you:

• Have at least 2 years of experience doing research or working in a research-focused role, such as a Research Engineer, Researcher, Research Scientist, Applied Scientist, or similar role, at a company or startup, in a research lab, or in academia
• Are exceptional at computer science, mathematics, or systems thinking
• Can learn unfamiliar technical areas quickly
• Enjoy working on ambiguous, open-ended problems
• Care about elegant solutions, not just working solutions
• Are comfortable going from research idea → implementation → experiment → analysis
• Want to work on problems where the answer is not already known
• Nice to have: A track record of original technical contributions through publications, open-source work, or other impactful technical work

We especially value strong evidence of technical excellence—whether through research, olympiads, competitive programming, mathematics competitions, open-source contributions, systems projects, AI projects, or other work that demonstrates unusual technical ability.
